This month we feature Laura Mahon, a Senior Social Media Manager and Digital Producer we placed in a Contract role, who then went on to accept a permanent position in the agency. Here’s a little bit about why she made it into Interactiveinc’s Candidate of the Month blog.
Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Laura landed in Sydney in February 2014, ditching the rain to see what life was like in the sunshine! Having studied everything from Event Management and PR to Desktop Publishing and Sound Engineering, Laura’s college years gave her the knowledge and insight into varying industries that helped her get her first dream role.
In 2008, Laura landed an internship with Irish and UK Youth Communication specialists Thinkhouse, eventually clocking up five happy years managing PR and digital accounts and strategies from ideation to completion for world renowned brands such as Heineken, AOL, Three Mobile, Ben & Jerry’s and Vodafone, among others. This dual role in PR and digital gave Laura a unique insight into both industries, helping her build strong communications and content strategies to garner the best results for her clients.
Since arriving in Sydney, Laura has freelanced with a few digital agencies, taking on roles from Social Analyst to Project Management and now, Social Media Management. Through working in different agencies and with varying brands, Laura’s view of the Australian market is quite the contrary to what she was told before arriving in Sydney. While many claim the Australian market is quite behind that of Europe or America when it comes to social, Laura feels that this isn’t necessarily the case – while some brands and brand managers are a bit late to the game and nervous when it comes to allocating the necessary spend to social this is a problem across the board. The Australian agencies are on top of their game, experimenting with new platforms, building social by design campaigns and embracing agile and reactive content, in line with what their audience wants.
Each month, Interactiveinc feature a Candidate of the Month. Someone in the digital media industry that stands out – someone we think worth writing about to show that people in the digital industry have interesting lives, skills and interests.
