Work life balance – what does that really mean?

Being in recruitment I hear this term used often by candidates. What I have come to realise is that it comes down to what you want in your life.

A huge amount of enjoyment in life comes out of passion, and with passion comes drive and motivation. Basically work doesn’t feel like work.

The digital advertising industry is full of passion and hard work. Working in ad agencies is never 9 to 5. The satisfaction I get out of working in digital recruitment is watching candidates evolve from Mid-Weight roles to Senior roles and even onto Creative Director and Head of Digital. The only thing I notice they have done to get there is put in a considerable amount of effort, dedication and creativity into what they do.

Don’t get me wrong spending time with family is really important. I am a Dad and a husband and I love spending time with my family. However building a business takes, passion, drive, persistence and a core belief in what I am doing, and yes a huge amount of time and effort.

If you look at people that have achieved in their lives, you probably won’t see much balance. I am not talking just about the Steve Jobs, although the guy did invent and build some of the most innovative products to date.

Let’s look at Kelly Slater as an example. He is naturally talented and all he does is surf, literally, and won 10 world titles in doing so. Probably not much time spent doing anything else but I bet the guy loves what he does and wouldn’t trade it in for anything. He would also probably say that to achieve 10 world titles he had to work extremely hard for them!

The point on work life balance, is probably more to do with finding a love for what you do, with that the rest will follow and nothing will seem like work.
